  1. 21. Neutrophil extracellular traps in cancer and cancer-associated thrombosis

    Författare :Axel Rosell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cancer is associated with a hypercoagulable state, and venous thromboembolism (VTE) may be the first sign of occult cancer. Cancer screening of all patients presenting with VTE would, however, overload the healthcare system and burden patients with unnecessary investigations. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Pathogenic Mechanisms of the Arctic Alzheimer Mutation

    Författare :Charlotte Sahlin; Lars Lannfelt; Lars Nilsson; Christian Haass; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Neurosciences; Alzheimer s disease; Arctic mutation; Amyloid precursor protein; Amyloid-β; APP processing; Aβ oligomers; Docosahexaenoic acid; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, neuropathologically characterized by neurofibrillay tangles and deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides. Several mutations in the gene for amyloid precursor protein (APP) cause familial AD and affect APP processing leading to increased levels of Aβ42. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Evaluation of HIV testing strategies and monitoring of immune responses in HIV-vaccinated individuals in Tanzania

    Författare :Said Aboud; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes studies on the evaluation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and simple rapid HIV assays for use in HIV testing strategies in resource-limited settings and studies of HIV vaccine-induced immune responses. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) preparation techniques were also studied in preparation for use in the HIV vaccine trials. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Neuroinflammation and pain

    Författare :Linda Block; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neuroinflammation; Pain; Persistant pain; Astrocytes; Morphine; Naloxone; Intrathecal administration;

    Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Background: Persistent pain that remains long after the physiological trigger has been resolved is a disabling condition. A possible mechanism for the transition from acute physiological pain to persistent pain involves low-grade inflammation in the central nervous system, in which inflammatory-activated astrocytes play a significant role. 5. 25. Oxidative stress-related factors in abdominal aortic aneurysm: potential clinical implications

    Författare :Sakshi Vats; Allmänmedicin och klinisk epidemiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; abdominal aortic aneurysm AAA ; mitochondria; Heme; Oxidative stress; Genetics; Epigenetic;

    Sammanfattning : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a mostly silent vascular disease, with a rupture-related mortality rate exceeding 80%. To aid in future diagnosis and prognosis efforts, the studies included in the present thesis have explored the role of specific oxidative stress-related factors in the context of AAA using two population-based cohorts: AAA screening cohort of 65-year-old males (n = 421) and the Malmö diet and cancer study (MDCS) (n = 25252).
