Sammanfattning: Unexpected problems connected with supervision in residential institutions caring for disturbed and disadvantaged children and adolescents originated this study. The outcome has implications for future planning and support of institutions providing care. Supervisors need to know , not only the primary task of the institution, but also what sort of base the institution is developed from, what governing ideas direct the work and if the institution is mainly performing a conscious or unconscious primary task.
