  1. 1. Novel approaches in modeling of soil carbon : Upscaling theories and energetics

    Författare :Arjun Chakrawal; Stefano Manzoni; Hyun-Seob Song; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Microorganisms; soil C cycling; spatial heterogeneity; energetics; thermodynamics; microbial metabolism; calorespirometric ratio; microbial traits; heat dissipation; microscale; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Soils contain more carbon (C) than terrestrial (above ground) and atmospheric carbon combined. Mismanagement of soil C could lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions, whereas practices leading to increased C storage would help mitigate climate change while improving soil fertility and ecological functions. 2. 2. Plant-associated soil communities : Patterns, drivers and aboveground consequences

    Författare :Pil Uthaug Rasmussen; Ayco J. M. Tack; Martijn Bezemer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aboveground-belowground interactions; arbuscular mycorrhiza; climate; dispersal; environmental drivers; fungi; genetic variation; nematodes; plant-herbivore interactions; soil communities; spatial patterns; ekologi och evolution; Ecology and Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Soil contains a wealth of diversity – bacteria, fungi, nematodes, arthropods and earthworms are just some of the many organisms found belowground. These organisms play an important role in shaping the soil environment and they strongly influence plant fitness, diversity and community composition. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Aspects of heterogeneity : effects of clear-cutting and post-harvest extraction of bioenergy on plants in boreal forests

    Författare :Marcus Åström; Christer Nilsson; Katherine Frego; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :aspect; clear-cutting; disturbance; habitat quality; liverworts; logging residues; mosses; resilience; slash; slope; topography;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract. The objectives of this thesis are to evaluate (1) the influence of slope aspect on boreal plant responses to clear-cutting and (2) the effects of post-harvest extraction of bioenergy (logging residues or slash) on plant composition, richness and performance in clear-cuts. 4. 4. Earthworm and arbuscular mycorrhizal communities in agricultural soils : management of key soil organisms for sustainable agriculture

    Författare :Kaisa Torppa; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Intensive agriculture is detrimental to soil biodiversity and functioning. Promoting communities of key soil organisms, such as earthworms and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, may help improve agricultural sustainability by replacing inputs with ecosystem services. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Wild plants can improve their rhizosphere chemistry in acid soils

    Författare :Marion Schöttelndreier; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; wild plants.; time pattern; soil heterogeneity; rhizotrons; rhizosphere; pH; oxalic acid; nutrient availability; malic acid; hydroponics; citric acid; 14C; biodegradation; acid soils; aluminium toxicity; Soil Science; agricultural hydrology; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Growth conditions on acid soils may be hampered by low nutrient availability and phytotoxic Al (aluminium) concentrations. In this thesis I present my studies on adaptation mechanisms of wild plants to acid soils in the close root environment, the rhizosphere. LÄS MER
