11. Genetic improvement of shape stability in Norway spruce and Scots pine sawn timber
Sammanfattning : Poor shape stability of sawn softwood timber, causes substantial economic losses for sawmills and the building industry. Sawn timber twist is regarded to be the most severe deformation and has been shown to be controlled by intrinsic wood properties like wood shrinkage and spiral grain angle. LÄS MER
12. Quantitative genetics of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) wood quality traits in Sweden
Sammanfattning : Stem bending, breakage, and general instability of lodgepole pine has been a major problem in northern Sweden due to low stem stiffness. The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the potential incorporation of wood quality traits into lodgepole pine advanced breeding programs. LÄS MER
13. Protein Damage Control during Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation: Role of the Proteasome
Sammanfattning : During the lifespan of organisms ranging from yeast to humans, there is an accumulation of macromolecular damage. However, these organisms produce youthful progeny with low damage levels. This thesis focuses on how this is accomplished. LÄS MER
14. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus : interactions with host cell structures in viral replication
Sammanfattning : Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a human pathogen, and was first associated with its corresponding disease during an outbreak in the mid 1940s. At that time, outbreaks were mainly restricted to the former Soviet Union, Africa and Asia, but lately disease incidents have markedly risen and CCHFV is now also endemic in several countries in the Middle East and Europe. 15. The significance of sexuality and cyst formation in the life-cycles of four marine dinoflagellate species
Sammanfattning : Sexuality and cyst formation were studied in the marine dinoflagellate species Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, Gymnodinium nolleri Ellegaard ? Moestrup, Alexandrium catenella (Whedon et Kofoid) Balech, and Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge. The study included the morphological characterization of sexual stages and processes, the time and description of meiosis, the study of the length and regulation of the mandatory dormancy period of resting cysts, and the relationships among parental strains and cyst progeny at phenotypic and molecular levels.
