Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to an increased understanding of the underlying conditions for the development of a domestic market for consumer goods by studying how the distribution of goods between the town and the countryside in the county of Hälsingland, Sweden, was organized during the first half of the 19th century. The thesis has analyzed the different kinds of persons involved in the distribution of goods, their functions and mutual relations. LÄS MER
2. Of Mangroves and Middlemen : A study of social and ecological linkages in a coastal community
Sammanfattning : This thesis studies some of the links between the social and ecological components in a coastal Social-Ecological System (SES) of East Africa to gain insight into factors affecting natural resource management at a community level. It does so by assessing the return of ecosystem goods and services in restored mangroves through both ecological and socio-economic measurements, and by empirically studying variations and diversity in content of local ecological knowledge among resource users, its relation to valuation of ecosystem goods and services and its distribution across a social network. 3. The exchange of cotton : Ugandan peasants, colonial market regulations and the organisation of international cotton trade, 1904-1918
Sammanfattning : Between 1904 and 1918, the British colonial administration in Uganda regulated the cotton industry in order to maintain and improve the quality of the exported cotton. The main topics of the dissertation are: Why were these regulations enacted and who initiated them? The dissertation analyses the impact of the organisation of the international cotton trade on the buying practices in the local Uganda cotton market. LÄS MER
