  1. 11. Approaching Mathematical Discourse : Two analytical frameworks and their relation to problem solving interactions

    Författare :Andreas Ryve; Kimmo Eriksson; Inger Wistedt; Anna Sfard; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Didactics of Mathematics; Mathematics Education; Analytical approaches; Communication; Concept maps; Contextualization; Discourse; Engineering students; Higher Education; Intentional analysis; Methodological framworks; Problem solving; Prospective teachers; Student teachers; Teacher education; Theoretical frameworks; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK; Matematik tillämpad matematik;

    Sammanfattning : The driving force of conducting the two studies presented in this thesis is to examine ways that conceptual understanding and problem solving could be part of mathematics teaching, and through that, part of students' mathematical knowledge. The specific aims of the thesis are: 1) to characterize the classroom discourse of two, apparently similar, problem solving courses in teacher education and 2) to discuss the possibilities of developing two analytical approaches - the communicational approach to cognition and the dialogical approach - used for studying mathematical discourse. 2. 12. Opening the black box of mathematics teachers’ professional growth : a study of the process of teacher learning

    Författare :Sara Engvall; Magnus Österholm; Christina Ottander; Björn Palmberg; Hanna Palmér; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Teacher learning; professional growth; professional development program; formative assessment; motivation; mathematics teachers; secondary school teachers; pedagogiskt arbete; educational work;

    Sammanfattning : There is a lot of research done on professional development programs for teachers, especially with a focus on different characteristics of the program and whether it makes teachers change their teaching practice to such an extent that it enhances student achievement. However, there is not much research done on the learning process. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Assessing mathematical creativity : comparing national and teacher-made tests, explaining differences and examining impact

    Författare :Jesper Boesen; Johan Lithner; Torulf Palm; Gunnar Gjone; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mathematical reasoning; creative reasoning; moderate high stake; teacher made tests; imitative reasoning; assessment; impact; influence; effect; mathematical competence; national tests; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK; Mathematical reasoning; creative reasoning; moderate high stake; teacher made tests; imitative reasoning; assessment; impact; influence; effect; mathematical competence; national tests;

    Sammanfattning : Students’ use of superficial reasoning seems to be a main reason for learning difficulties in mathematics. It is therefore important to investigate the reasons for this use and the components that may affect students’ mathematical reasoning development. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Methodology and Infrastructure for Statistical Computing in Genomics : Applications for Ancient DNA

    Författare :Kristiina Ausmees; Carl Nettelblad; Mattias Jakobsson; Flora Jay; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; statistical computing; genotype imputation; ancient DNA; deep learning; dimensionality reduction; genetic clustering; distributed computing; Scientific Computing; Beräkningsvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the development and evaluation of computational methods for analysis of genetic data. A particular focus is on ancient DNA recovered from archaeological finds, the analysis of which has contributed to novel insights into human evolutionary and demographic history, while also introducing new challenges and the demand for specialized methods. 5. 15. Learning Computing at University: Participation and Identity : A Longitudinal Study

    Författare :Anne-Kathrin Peters; Arnold Pears; Anders Berglund; Anna Eckerdal; Lars Ulriksen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; computing education research; engineering education research; computer science; higher education; engagement; diversity; equity; gender; competencies; culture; longitudinal; identity; participation; power; agency; uniformity; communities of practice; social theory of learning; phenomenography; student reflections; Datavetenskap med inriktning mot datavetenskapens didaktik; Computer Science with specialization in Computer Science Education Research;

    Sammanfattning : Computing education has struggled with student engagement and diversity in the student population for a long time. Research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education suggests that taking a social, long-term perspective on learning is a fruitful approach to resolving some of these persistent challenges.
