1. Atomistic modelling of functional solid oxides for industrial applications : Density Functional Theory, hybrid functional and GW-based studies
Sammanfattning : In this Thesis a set of functional solid oxides for industrial applications have been addressed by first principles and thermodynamical modelling. More specificially, measurable quantities such as Gibbs free energy, geometry and electronic structure have been calculated and compared when possible with experimental data. LÄS MER
2. Population Genetics of Human Genomic Elements
Sammanfattning : The genomes of living organisms are composed of a multitude of functional units, which interact with each other and their environment in a highly regulated fashion, to facilitate the expression of an enduring (and evolving) phenotype. Several approaches have emerged in the effort to identify these functional units and explore their activities. LÄS MER
3. Functional Metallic Glasses
Sammanfattning : For decades, Metallic Glass, with its isotropic featureless structure while exhibiting outstanding mechanical properties was possible only at a high rate of quenching and with at least one dimension in the submicron regime. This limitation was overcome with the discovery of Bulk Metallic glasses, BMGs, containing three or more elements following the additional two empirical rules of optimum geometric size differences and negative energy of mixing among the constituent elements. 4. Epidermal keratinocytes studied by X-ray microanalysis, with special reference to contact dermatitis : In vivo and in vitro studies of functional changes in human cells
Sammanfattning : By determining the intracellular elemental content, information can be obtained on the physiological status of cells. The cellular content of sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, chloride, potassium and calcium can be indicative for proliferation, cell membrane damage or cell death. LÄS MER
5. Functional and Modular As=C and P=C Group Motifs
Sammanfattning : This work focuses on the design, synthesis, characterization, and application projections of low-coordinated heavy pnictogen-containing (described by the generic letter E, hence E=C) phosphaalkenes (P=C) and arsaalkenes (As=C), with emphasis on the E=C group motifs. The work aims to understand their functional and modular character, reactivity, and potential applications by stabilizing, isolating, and characterizing these species in low-coordination environments.
