6. Social integration and immigrant mental health : the role of social capital and neighbourhood ethnic composition
Sammanfattning : Background: Nearly 20% of Sweden’s population are immigrants and research has identified inequalities in mental health between certain immigrant groups and the native Swedish population. The role of social integration factors such as social capital, defined as: “features of social organization such as networks, norms, and social trust that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutual benefit”, has been minimally explored in understanding differences in immigrant health. Sammanfattning : The theoretical point of departure in this dissertation proposes that the liberal welfare state includes a fundamental logic of integration, viewing the attainment of social equality between different categories in society as a main condition for social integration. But how can this logic of integration be applied to a multicultural society? Is trying to achieve equal access to certain socio-economic standards sufficient, or does cultural diversity call for other measures in order to fulfill the aim of equality and integration?In this study it is argued that the liberal welfare state in a multicultural society is confronted with three tensions. 9. A Cold War Pursuit : Soviet refugees in Sweden, 1945-54
Sammanfattning : What determines refugee policies in liberal democracies? Humanitarianism? International relations? Economics? Identity issues? International law? Concerns for national security? This book explores these factors through a case study of non-aligned Sweden’s management of Soviet refugees during the first decade of the Cold War. The policy of admission and political asylum; the government’s handling of direct Soviet demands regarding refugees; the Swedish authorities’ surveillance strategies and the continuing living conditions of individuals who were permitted to stay, are all studied in depth. 10. The Dynamic Detective : Special Interest and Seriality in Contemporary Detective Series
Sammanfattning : This study argues that the relatively new conventions of detective fiction, special interest and seriality, are expanding and regenerating the genre. Special interest designates a political, ethnic, regional, professional or hobby-related agenda of a special interest group (consisting, usually, of writer, protagonist and readers) which makes up an integral part of the detective story.
