  1. 1. Development of the gastrointestinal tract in young mammals : Effects of enteral provocation with protease or phytohaemagglutinin in neonatal rats

    Författare :Ester Arevalo Sureda; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Nyckelord :gut; Intestine; Pancreas; development; precocious; protease; PHA; enterocytes; permeability; endocytosis; IgG; FcRn; Blimp1; T-lymphocyte; passive immunity; altricial; neonatal; suckling; athymic; rat; immunohistochemistry IHC ;

    Sammanfattning : The rat, as an altritial species, is born with an immature gastrointestinal tract and intestinal barrier function, which is highly absorptive to milk-borne bioactive molecules that can pass undigested and reach the general circulation of the suckling newborn. This passage occurs by the neonatal-Fc-receptor (FcRn) binding and trancytosis of immunoglobulin G in the proximal small intestine (SI) and by the highly endocytic vacuolated enterocytes non-selectively in the distal SI. 2. 2. The cross-talk of iron and ascorbate -Complexation and intracellular regulation of transport in human enterocytes

    Författare :Nathalie Scheers; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NRAMP2; ascorbate; ferroportin; ferritin; iron; SVCT1; DCYTB;

    Sammanfattning : Iron deficiency is a serious health issue in developing countries and also in vulnerable groups of the industrialized world. There are several ways to address this issue. The present approach was to learn more about the basic mechanisms of iron uptake in the presence of ascorbate, one of the best enhancers of iron absorption. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The enterocyte in small intestinal adaption : an experimental and clinicopathological study with special reference to the ultrastructure of the brush border

    Författare :Roger Stenling; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Scanning electron microscopy; transmission electron microscopy; stereology;

    Sammanfattning : The small intestine mucosa is known to be able to adapt itself to several kinds of both physiological and pathological conditions. The adaptive patterns of the structure of the enterocytes, particularly their apical surface (brush border), were studied in three models: (1) in rats, subjected to antrectomy or antral exclusion, combined with gastroduodenostomy and gastrojejunostomy; (2) in rats with alloxan diabetes; (3) in children with coeliac disease; a) in its active phase; b) after long-term treatment with gluten-free diets; c) after long-term challenge with dietary gluten following treatment; d) after short-term elimination of dietary gluten. 4. 4. Structure and dynamics of epithelial cells : Studied with confocal microscopy and flourescence recovery after photobleaching

    Författare :Kajsa Holmgren-Peterson; Annika Scheynius; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Epithelial cells of the human body form a physical barrier to harmful agents and potential invading microorganisms. In the small intestine they must also produce enzymes for digestion of food and be able to absorb nutrients. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Gastro-intestinal toxicity related to haemopoietic stem cell transplantation with a special focus on the intestinal barrier function

    Författare :Jan-Erik Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The myeloablative, cytotoxic therapy (conditioning treatment) prior to haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has the combined purpose of eliminating leukaemic or cancer cells located in the bone marrow or elsewhere in the body and, in the allogeneic setting, of suppressing the immune response of the recipient to prevent marrow rejection. The unwanted effect is the inevitable elimination of normal, haemopoietic stem cells, a lethal effect which is circumvented by the following administration of haemopoietic stem cells from the patient (autologous HSCT) or from a related or an unrelated donor (allogeneic HSCT).
