  1. 1. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes

    Författare :Inês Braga Gonçalves; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Egg size; embryo development; embryo survival; hypoxia; male quality; mate choice; mating constraints; oxygen; parental care; parental effects; paternal care; reproductive compensation; sex-role reversal; sexual conflict; Syngnathidae; Syngnathus typhle;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 2. 2. Paternal care and brood reduction in a pipefish

    Författare :Gry Sagebakken; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Parental care; brood reduction; embryo survival; parental condition; filial cannibalism; post-mating sexual selection; HSI; sexual conflicts; Syngnathus typhle; male brooding;

    Sammanfattning : From an evolutionary and adaptive perspective, the occurrence and extent of parental care in animals (investment in offspring beyond the genetic contribution) is expected to depend on an optimal (fitness-maximizing) balance of its costs and benefits. Males of the sex-role reversed broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle, which care for eggs and embryos and may perform brood reduction, are particularly interesting in this respect. LÄS MER

  3. 3. GM-CSF. A regulator of pre-implantation embryo development

    Författare :Cecilia Sjöblom; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :GM-CSF blastocyst embryo culture cytokine growth factor GM-CSF receptor glucose transport apoptosis;

    Sammanfattning : GM-CSF is a multifunctional cytokine expressed in abundance in the female reproductive tract during early pregnancy. We have investigated the regulatory influence of GM-CSF in development of pre-implantation mouse and human embryos. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Improved environmental monitoring and assessment : Establishing links between effects of chemical pollution at different levels of biological organization in a Baltic Sea bioindicator species (Monoporeia affinis)

    Författare :Martin Reutgard; Magnus Breitholtz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental health assessment; environmental monitoring; chemical pollution; hypoxia; bioindicators; biomarkers; teratogenicity; embryo toxicity; oxidative stress; acetylcholine esterase. Monoporeia affinis; Baltic Sea; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : A large number of chemicals enters the marine environment via atmospheric deposition, run-off, rivers and streams, industrial effluents and municipal wastewater. To understand how chemicals affect environmental health, monitoring and assessment approaches need to combine physical, chemical and biological effect parameters from different levels of biological organization. 5. 5. Transcription regulation across levels of chromatin organization

    Författare :Roshan Vaid; Mattias Mannervik; Goncalo Castelo-Branco; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transcription; chromatin; epigenetics; Drosophila; embryo development; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : With advancements in high-throughput sequencing and high-resolution microscopy techniques, the significance of genome organization in transcription regulation is rapidly unveiling. Nonetheless, we are yet far from completely understanding this key relationship. LÄS MER
