  1. 1. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes

    Författare :Inês Braga Gonçalves; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Egg size; embryo development; embryo survival; hypoxia; male quality; mate choice; mating constraints; oxygen; parental care; parental effects; paternal care; reproductive compensation; sex-role reversal; sexual conflict; Syngnathidae; Syngnathus typhle;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 2. 2. Pyralid moth reproduction: Communication, Constraints & Control

    Författare :Camilla Ryne; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant parasitology; Entomology; växtparasitologi; Entomologi; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Olfactory cues play an important role in the reproduction of three pyralid moths, the Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella), the Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella) and the almond moth (E. cautella). Both males and females of P. interpunctella are capable of multiple matings. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The evolution of mating rates in Pieris napi

    Författare :Jonas Bergström; Christer Wiklund; Göran Arnqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the green-veined white butterfly (Pieris napi), females obtain direct fitness benefits from mating multiply and studies have shown that fitness increases seemingly monotonically with number of matings. The reason is that at mating males transfer a large nutritious gift (a so called nuptial gift) to the females that the females use to increase both their fecundity and lifespan. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Life history evolution in a bivoltine butterfly

    Författare :Helena Larsdotter Mellström; Christer Wiklund; Klaus Fischer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bivoltine; Diapause; Lepidoptera; Life history; Mating system; Pheromone; Polyphenism; Population density; Sexual selection; Sperm competition; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Evolution is not always straight-forward, as selection pressures may differ between different generations of the same species. This thesis focuses on the evolution of life history of the model species, the Green-veined White butterfly Pieris napi. In central Sweden P. napi has two generations per year. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Thinking in water : Brain size evolution in Cichlidae and Syngnathidae

    Författare :Masahito Tsuboi; Niclas Kolm; Andrew Iwaniuk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; brain evolution; phylogenetic comparative method; the expensive tissue hypothesis; cichlid; pipefish; seahorse; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Brain size varies greatly among vertebrates. It has been proposed that the diversity of brain size is produced and maintained through a balance of adaptations to different types and levels of cognitive ability and constraints for adaptive evolution. LÄS MER
