21. Removal of natural organic matter by enhanced coagulation in Nicaragua
Sammanfattning : The existence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in a drinking water plant of Nicaragua has been investigated in order to see whether the concentration exceeded the maximum contaminant level recommended by the environmental protection agency of the United States (USEPA) and the Nicaragua guidelines. The influence of pH, temperature, chlorine dose and contact time on the formation of THMs were studied. LÄS MER
22. Innate immune cell response in sepsis
Sammanfattning : Leukocyte recruitment is known to be a key feature at sites of inflammation and important in the combat against infectious agents. However, the mechanisms of leukocyte recruitment in the pulmonary microvasculature in response to local and systemic inflammation remain elusive. LÄS MER
23. Leukocytes and Coronary Artery Disease : Experimental and Clinical Studies
Sammanfattning : Tissue factor (TF) is the initiator of the coagulation cascade. Monocytes do not normally express TF, but can be induced to do so by certain stimuli. Aberrant TF expression is important in the thrombotic complications of bacterial sepsis, certain malignancies and coronary artery disease (CAD). LÄS MER
24. Biomaterials and Hemocompatibility
Sammanfattning : Biomaterials are commonly used in the medical clinic today; however, artificial materials can activate the cascade systems in the blood (complement-, coagulation-, contact- and fibrinolytic systems) as well as the platelets to various degrees. When an artificial surface comes in contact with blood, plasma proteins will be adsorbed to the surface within seconds. LÄS MER
25. Circulating biomarkers in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm
Sammanfattning : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) develops in 3-6% of the population over 65 years and affects mainly men. AAA has a complex etiology involving inflammation, proteolysis, fibrinolysis and coagulation. LÄS MER
