Sammanfattning : The city of Isfahan, one of the most historic urban settlements in Iran, has undergone dramatic socio-spatial transformations during the recent decades, beginning with the modernization programs of the 1920s. While the urban structure of Isfahan was the outcome of a process over centuries of incremental evolution, a new mode of place making and street patterns was imposed on the historic fabric of the city within the space of only a few decades. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to shed light on Post-Soviet urban renewal and people’s perceptions of changes that recently occurred in both the city of Riga and Latvian society more generally since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Sammanfattning : This thesis is written within the field of architecture and urban planning. Based upon a critical examination of the Critical Planning Theory, communicative rationality and the concept of consensus, a model of communicative planning as management of conflicts is adopted as a theoretical framework together with the concepts of transparency and knowledge as qualitative aspects of an urban renewal planning process within a deliberative democratic society.
