  1. 1. Spatially Distributed Hydrological Modelling : Wetness Derived from Digital Elevation Models to Estimate Peatland Carbon

    Författare :Abdulghani Hasan; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; modelling hydrology; Digital elevation models; LiDAR data; topographic wetness index; GIS; permafrost; Stordalen; peatland;

    Sammanfattning : To study the hydrology of peatlands and explore wetness distribution is difficultmainly due to the complexity of the surface of peatlands, and also due to the presence of permafrost underlain peatlands in the arctic regions. I have chosen the area called Stordalen mire in the arctic region in northern Sweden for my study. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Peatland dynamics in response to past and potential future climate change : A regional modelling approach

    Författare :Nitin Chaudhary; BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PEATLANDS; PERMAFROST; Carbon accumulation; Microtopography; LPJ-GUESS; Earth system models;

    Sammanfattning : The majority of the northern peatlands developed during the Holocene as a result of a positive mass balance between net primary productivity (NPP) and heterotrophic decomposition rates. Over that time they have sequestered a huge amount of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Carbon trace gas dynamics in subarctic lakes

    Författare :Joachim Jansen; Patrick Crill; Andreas Lorke; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lakes; methane; carbon dioxide; fluxes; gas transfer; proxy; climate change; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Northern lakes are important sources of greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere. Emissions are expected to increase as the climate continues to warm. Even so, lake carbon budgets are currently poorly constrained. This is in part because of a limited understanding of the processes that govern the flux. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Temporal and spatial variability of carbon cycling in a subarctic landscape

    Författare :Torbjörn Johansson; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geologi; physical geography; Geology; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; Permafrost; Herbivory; Subarctic; Aerial photography; Vegetation change; Carbon balance; fysisk geografi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the carbon balance in a subarctic landscape at different temporal and spatial scales. Its focus is mainly on the peatland and mountain birch forest (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) ecosystems within the Abisko area in northernmost Sweden. This is an area with a temperature close to the 0 OC mean annual isotherm. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Land-atmosphere interaction of a subarctic palsa mire

    Författare :Marcin Jackowicz-Korczynski; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; eddy covariance; chamber; methnaol; isoprene; nonmethane hydrocarbons; methane; carbon dioxide; carbon; mire; permafrost; subarctic; palsa; greenhouse gas;

    Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to quantitatively estimate the gaseous exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) between a subarctic wetland ecosystem and the atmosphere. Additionally some initial estimates of the carbon input to the atmosphere of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were also obtained by combining different techniques in a joint setting. LÄS MER
