  1. 1. Studies in Glacier Mass Balance : Measurement and its errors

    Författare :Andrew Mercer; Peter Jansson; Gunhild Rosqvist; Ian Brown; Jonathan Carrivick; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Glaciology; Mass Balance; Measurement Errors; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : The study of the surface mass balance of valley glaciers has a long history but one that is dogged by uncertainty and errors, and uncertainty about those errors. These problems are acknowledged by the glaciological community and have been examined and formalised in several publications. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Regulation of carbon dioxide emission from Swedish boreal lakes and the Gulf of Bothnia

    Författare :Grete Algesten; Mats Jansson; Pirkko Kortelainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; lakes; boreal; Gulf of bothnia; CO2; NEE; DOC; mineralization; sediment; catchment; net heterotrophy; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : The global carbon cycle is subject to intense research, where sources and sinks for greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide in particular, are estimated for various systems and biomes. Lakes have previously been neglected in carbon balance estimations, but have recently been recognized to be significant net sources of CO2. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Diatoms as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden

    Författare :Christian Bigler; Ingemar Renberg; Roland Hall; N. John Anderson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; diatoms; Holocene; paleolimnology; climate change; lake sediments; transfer functions; quantitative environmental reconstructions; northern Sweden; Abisko; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden (Abisko region, 68°21'N, 18°49'E). A modern surface-sediment calibration set including 100 lakes was developed and lake-water pH, sedimentary organic content (assessed by loss-on-ignition) and temperature were identified as most powerful environmental variables explaining the variance within the diatom assemblages. 4. 4. Cross-scale perspectives on heterogeneity in Swedish boreal forests

    Författare :Sofia Eriksson; Monica Hammer; Helle Skånes; Risto Kalliola; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sustainable forest management; biodiversity conservation; landscape analysis; historical maps; ownership; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning; Geography; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : Maintaining species diversity, ecosystem functioning, and socioeconomic values requires continued ecosystem heterogeneity across scales. This thesis aims to bridge gaps between ecological theory, environmental goals, and practical application of sustainable forest management needed to maintain such heterogeneity. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Relict non-glacial surfaces and autochthonous blockfields in the northern Swedish mountains

    Författare :Bradley W. Goodfellow; Arjen Stroeven; Clas Hättestrand; Johan Kleman; Krister Jansson; Adrian Hall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blockfield; chemical weathering; cosmogenic exposure dating; glaciated landscape; northern Sweden; periglacial geomorphology; relict surface; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning; Geography; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : Relict non-glacial surfaces occur in many formerly glaciated landscapes, where they represent areas that have escaped significant glacial modification. Frequently distinguished by blockfield mantles, relict non-glacial surfaces are important archives of long-term weathering and landscape evolution processes. LÄS MER
