  1. 1. Self-assembly Strategies for Functional DNA Nanostructures

    Författare :John Tumpane; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon nanotube; polarised spectroscopy; nanotechnology; self-assembly; orientation; lipid membrane; gel electrophoresis; DNA;

    Sammanfattning : The technological revolution of the twentieth century was famously subject to Moore’s law which related the rate of growth to the ability to scale-down the size of the components – size matters. Several decades later we are, however, approaching the limit of what is possible with silicon wafers. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Templating and self-assembly of biomimetic materials

    Författare :Christian Mille; Lennart Bergström; Mika Linden; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biomimetic; biotemplating; self-assembly; triply periodic minimal surfaces; the gyroid; photonic crystals; band gap; structural color; chirality; butterflies; membrane proteins; lipid bilayers; sol-gel; mesostructured; polyhedral nanofoams; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the use of biomolecular assemblies for creating materials with novel properties. Several aspects of biomimetic materials have been investigated, from fundamental studies on membrane shaping molecules to the integration of biomolecules with inorganic materials. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Lipid Self-Assembly and Lipase Action

    Författare :Johanna Borné; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; specific activity.; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; vesicles; cubosomes; liquid crystalline phases; sodium oleate; oleic acid; diolein; monoolein; Oleic acid based acyl glycerols; Thermomyces lanuginosa lipase;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the action of the Thermomyces lanuginosa lipase (TLL) on "real" substrates, that is, lipid aggregates - vesicles, micelles, emulsions, gels and liquid crystals is discussed. Even for a pure triolein, the system becomes quite complex as the lipolytic process starts, both in terms of structure and composition, involving 5 additional components - diolein (DO), monoolein (MO), oleic acid (OA), sodium oleate (NaO) and glycerol . 4. 4. Self-Assembly in Lipid-Protein Systems : Lung Surfactant, Stratum Corneum and Model Membranes

    Författare :Jenny Andersson; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lipid self-assembly; lung surfactant; stratum corneum; dehydrin; cholesterol; osmolytes; urea; TMAO; ssNMR; cSAXS;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores lipid self-assembly and aims to give a broad picture of self-assembly structures in simple and complex lipid-protein systems. The systems studied are lung surfactant, stratum corneum and simple model membranes. The lung surfactant mixture lines the alveolus in our lungs and stabilises the air- tissue interface. LÄS MER

  5. 5. DNA-Controlled Lipid-Membrane Fusion

    Författare :Lisa Simonsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; exocytosis; vesicles; DNA; FRET; fluorescence resonance energy transfer; model system; total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy; TIRF microscopy; self-assembly; site-specificity; diffusion; biomembranes; lipid bilayer; membrane fusion;

    Sammanfattning : Membrane fusion is essential for nerve-cell communication, for protein transport between cell organelles and the cell-membrane and for enabling the merger between virus and host membranes during virus infection. We have demonstrated that short DNA oligonucleotides, membrane-attached via CH in an orientation that mimics the overall zipperlike architecture of fusion-inducing proteins, induce fusion of both suspended vesicles and vesicles site-specifically tethered to SLBs.
