  1. 1. Dynamics of Biomembranes and Rheological Properties of Living Cells

    Författare :Peter Berntsen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cell mechanics; lipid dynamics; cell rheology; biomembranes; water dynamics; relaxations; phospholipids; glass transition;

    Sammanfattning : An ingenious assembly of biomolecules and water constitute what we call biological tissue. The presence of water in this assembly is fundamental for the physiological processes and can make the difference between life and death. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Modeling of biomembranes: from computational toxicology to simulations of neurodegenerative diseases

    Författare :Inna Ermilova; Alexander Lyubartsev; Marta Pasenkiewicz-Gierula; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biomembranes; lipid bilayers; Alzheimer s disease; Parkinson disease; computational toxicology; passive diffusion; hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers; omega-3; omega-6; amyloid beta peptide; molecular dynamics simulations; SLipids force field; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : It was known from the middle of the last century that a cell-membrane is a lipid bilayer. Since that time a large number of experimental studies has been done in order to see how a certain molecule can penetrate through a membrane. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Fluid Lipid Membranes

    Författare :Erik G. Brandt; Olle Edholm; Mats Wallin; Markus Deserno; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biological fluid dynamics; biomembranes; hydrodynamics; lipid bilayers; molecular dynamics; neutron spin echo;

    Sammanfattning : Lipid molecules form thin biological membranes that envelop all living cells, and behave as two-dimensional liquid sheets immersed in bulk water. The interactions of such biomembranes with their environment lay the foundation of a plethora of biological processes rooted in the mesoscopic domain - length scales of 1-1000 nm and time scales of 1-1000 ns. 4. 4. Computer Simulations of Heterogenous Biomembranes

    Författare :Joakim P. M. Jämbeck; Alexander P. Lyubartsev; D. Peter Tieleman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular simulation; force field development; biological membranes; free energy calculations; rational drug design; solute-membrane interactions; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Molecular modeling has come a long way during the past decades and in the current thesis modeling of biological membranes is the focus. The main method of choice has been classical Molecular Dynamics simulations and for this technique a model Hamiltonian, or force field (FF), has been developed for lipids to be used for biological membranes. 5. 5. DNA-Controlled Lipid-Membrane Fusion

    Författare :Lisa Simonsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; exocytosis; vesicles; DNA; FRET; fluorescence resonance energy transfer; model system; total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy; TIRF microscopy; self-assembly; site-specificity; diffusion; biomembranes; lipid bilayer; membrane fusion;

    Sammanfattning : Membrane fusion is essential for nerve-cell communication, for protein transport between cell organelles and the cell-membrane and for enabling the merger between virus and host membranes during virus infection. We have demonstrated that short DNA oligonucleotides, membrane-attached via CH in an orientation that mimics the overall zipperlike architecture of fusion-inducing proteins, induce fusion of both suspended vesicles and vesicles site-specifically tethered to SLBs.
