6. The use of protein biomarkers in ecotoxicology : Studies of oxidative and genotoxic stress in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)
Sammanfattning : Many environmental pollutants, heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) among them, are toxic by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress may be defined as a state in an organism when its inherent capacity to handle oxyradicals is surpassed, and it may result in peroxidation of lipids, and damage to proteins and DNA. 7. Ecological and physiological aspects of contaminant accumulation and transport by the filter-feeding mussel, Mytilus edulis
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the influence of food availability on the bioaccumulation kinetics and the transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) by the Baltic Sea blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. In laboratory studies, food availability was found to significantly modify the rate of physiological processes involved in filter-feeding. LÄS MER
8. Importance of blue mussels for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in subtidal habitats
Sammanfattning : Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., occur on rocky and sedimentary shores worldwide where they often form dense aggregates. These assemblages change the local environment and create unique habitats. LÄS MER
9. Protein Expression in Baltic Sea Blue Mussels Exposed to Natural and Anthropogenic Stress : The use of stress inducible proteins in ecotoxicological studies
Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is the early detection of stress in the environment. It has been proposed that studies on the cellular level would detect stress reactions earlier in time compared to common physiological methods. LÄS MER
10. Bioaccumulation and biological effects of organic contaminants in Icelandic coastal waters
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, studies on organic contamination from both diffuse and point sources in Icelandic waters are presented. The aim was to investigate bioaccumulation and biological effects of the contaminants or biomarkers, and their applicability in environmental marine coastal monitoring, especially in areas with moderate or low levels of contamination such as Iceland.
