  1. 6. Distribution and connectivity of messenger molecules in the control of energy metabolism : focus on neuropeptides and calcium binding proteins

    Författare :Kylie S Foo; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Feeding is an essential and complex behavior which aims to provide the energy required for maintaining physiological homeostasis. The drive to feed is a powerful stimulus arising from metabolic demands, and reinforced by evolutionary pressure. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Mast cells and neuropeptides in the rat laryngeal mucosa : edema formation and effects of irradiation

    Författare :Mats Lidegran; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Certain diseases in the larynx like epiglottitis, false croup, and allergic reactions lead to local edema, which may result in respiratory distress. The pathophysiology of the various types of edema in the larynx is mainly unknown. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Thermal physiology and metabolism : Interplay between heat generation and energy homeostasis

    Författare :Gustavo Abreu-Vieira; Jan Nedergaard; Eric Ravussin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Mammal metabolism is intimately connected to the maintenance of body temperature. While metabolic pathways invariably produce heat as a by-product, the natural heat present in the environment also plays a role in defining the adaptive metabolism and general physiology of an organism. 4. 9. Effects of fractionated irradiation on salivary glands

    Författare :Lars Franzén; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Salivary glands; irradiation; xerostomia; acinar cells; secretion; cell membrane; neuropeptides;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis is a study of the effects of radiation on the salivary glands in an experimental and a clinical study. Irradiation is a cornerstone in the management of head and neck cancer and is as other modalities of cancer treatment, afflicted with adverse reactions. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Alzheimer's disease mutations and cellular signalling

    Författare :Monika Vestling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease is the most frequent cause of dementia in elderly and is characterised neuropathologically by the extracellular deposition of amyloid plaques (containing the 39-43 amino acid Abeta peptide), as well as intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed primarily of an abnormally hyperphosphorylated form of the microtubule-associated protein tau. A proportion (10- 15%) of Alzheimer's disease cases is familial, the remainder being sporadic. LÄS MER
