6. Modulatory effects and interactions of substance P, dopamine and 5-HT in a neuronal network
Sammanfattning : The spinal neuronal network that generates the locomotor rhythm in lamprey contains excitatory and inhibitory interneurons, reticulospinal inputs from the brainstem, and motor neurons. In this thesis, I have studied how the spinal locomotor network cart be modulated by a tachykinin, dopamine and 5- HT that are co-localized in midline neurons situated below the central canal. 7. Vestibular control of body orientation in lamprey
Sammanfattning : Maintenance of body orientation (postural control) is a vital motor function of the brain. The general goal of this project was to understand the organization and operation of neuronal networks responsible for postural control. The lamprey (a lower vertebrate) was used as a model animal. 8. Neural mechanisms for the visual control of spatial orientation and locomotion : electrophysiological and behavioural studies of the supraspinal control of posture and steering in the lamprey central nervous system, with reference to visuo-motor mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Neural mechanisms for the supraspinal control of posture and steering, in particular visuo-motor control and visuo-vestibular interaction in postural control, were investigated, using the lamprey as a model system. Behavioural experiments on intact and chronically lesioned animals, intra- and extracellular recordings in vitro and retrograde staining of neurons with horseradish peroxidase were utilized. LÄS MER
9. On the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors in motor control : analysis of synaptic, cellular and network properties
Sammanfattning : The organization of neurons into neuronal networks is a basic feature of the central nervous system. An understanding of the function of neuronal networks requires knowledge on both synaptic connectivity and cellular properties. LÄS MER
10. Mechanisms of rhythm generation in the lamprey locomotor network
Sammanfattning : Animals propel themselves through space, swimming, walking or flying, by rhythmic oscillatory movements of their body and limbs. In vertebrates these movements are mainly generated by specialized neuronal circuits in the spinal cord, called central pattern generators (CPGs) for locomotion. LÄS MER
