21. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) expression : the role of histone modification and alternative splicing
Sammanfattning : Telomerase, an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase responsible for telomeric DNA elongation, is silent in most normal differentiated human cells due to the tight repression of its catalytic unit, telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), whereas constitutive hTERT expression and telomerase activation are prerequisites for cellular immortalization/malignant transformation. As reconfiguration of chromatin acts like a master on/off switch, determining whether particular genes are active or inactive, the project was specifically designed to first elucidate molecular strategies that integrate diverse signalling pathways at the hTERT chromatin and consequently result in telomerase activation or repression in normal and malignant human cells. 23. Genomic feature identification in trypanosomatid parasites
Sammanfattning : The trypanosomatid parasites cause death and suffering, among humans as well as livestock. Current drugs lack efficacy and cause severe side effects, and no vaccines are available. Increased knowledge of the biology of the parasites is vital for the development of new drugs. LÄS MER
24. Development and Applications of in vitro Models to Study Human Brain Evolution and Disease
Sammanfattning : Neuroscience focusing on human development and disease has long been hampered due to ethical reasons, low tissue availability, and low translatability from animal models. To circumvent these obstacles, we have developed two methods for the investigation of human neural cells in culture. LÄS MER
25. Glucocorticosteroid effects on cytokine production: studies in a glucocorticosteroid resistance model and in allergic airway disease
Sammanfattning : Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) are potent anti-inflammatory drugs, probably due to inhibitory effects on cytokine production. However, a small number of asthma patients seem GCS-resistant. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-2(IL-2) and IL-4, produced during allergic airway inflammation have been proposed to induce the resistance to GCS. LÄS MER
