1. Combining Nanoplasmonics and Nanofluidics for Single Particle Catalysis
Sammanfattning : Nanoparticles are, due to their large exposed surface area, widely used in the field of heterogeneous catalysis where they accelerate and steer chemical reactions. Although catalysis has been known about for centuries, the scrutiny of catalysts under realistic application conditions is still a major challenge. LÄS MER
2. Transition Metal-Catalyzed Redox Reactions : A Journey from Homogeneous Ruthenium to Heterogeneous Palladium Catalysis
Sammanfattning : The first part of the thesis covers the development and utilization of electronically modified (pentaarylcyclopentadienyl)Ru-complexes in the racemization of secondary alcohols. This study revealed that the electronic properties of the substrate were the main factors dictating whether β-hydride elimination or hydride re-addition becomes the rate-determining step of the racemization process. 3. New Tools for Green Catalysis : Studies on a Biomimetic Hybrid Catalyst and a Novel Nanopalladium Catalyst
Sammanfattning : The first part of this thesis describes an improved synthetic route to hybrid (hydroquinone-Schiff base)cobalt catalysts. Preparation of the 5-(2,5-hydroxyphenyl)salicylaldehyde building block was improved by altering the protective groups of the hydroquinone (HQ) starting material. LÄS MER
4. Towards Artificial Photosynthesis: Exploration of Efficient First-Row Transition Metal-Based Water Oxidation Catalysts
Sammanfattning : Artificial photosynthesis provides a promising strategy for sustainable energy harvesting, yet its overall efficiency is limited by the water oxidation reaction. The subject of this thesis focuses on the exploration of highly efficient cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts for water oxidation, and the investigation of essential catalyst structure-activity relationships. 5. Transition metal-catalysis: Applications of dynamic kinetic resolution in total synthesis and developments of novel methodologies using heterogeneous Pd catalysts
Sammanfattning : The first part of the thesis describes a general and efficient route for the enantioselective synthesis of various α-substituted ketones and their corresponding lactones. The two key steps in this synthesis are the ruthenium and CALB-catalyzed dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) which provided the exocyclic acetates in high yields and excellent enantioselectivity and the subsequent Cu-catalyzed α-allylic substitution giving the corresponding α-substituted products with inversed stereochemistry in high yields.
