1. Fluorescent Probes and Protein Misfolding: Methods and Applications
Sammanfattning : Protein misfolding is a frequently occurring event in living cells and without the quality control, the consequences are disasterous. In this thesis, we studied protein misfolding in vitro by employing a variety of fluorophores, to either detect the highly ordered aggregates of intrinsically disordered proteins/peptides or slight misfolding of a natively folded protein. 2. α-Synuclein Fibril Formation and the Effects of Lipid Membranes
Sammanfattning : Amyloid protein aggregation results in major disturbances of cellular processes in humans. The most common amyloid-related disorders are Alzheimer´s disease and Parkinson´s disease. Parkinson´s disease is charaterized by the formation of protein-rich aggregates that are deposited in neurons, termed Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. LÄS MER
3. Modulation of Alzheimer's amyloid β peptide self-assembly : Insights into molecular mechanisms of peptide aggregation associated with Alzheimer's disease
Sammanfattning : Misfolding of proteins and peptides is closely linked to several neurodegenerative disorders, among them Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prominent example of brain diseases. The self-assembly of the amyloid β peptide (Aβ) into amyloid fibrils is one histologic hallmark of AD. LÄS MER
4. Characterization of Epoxide Hydrolases from Yeast and Potato
Sammanfattning : Epoxides are three-membered cyclic ethers formed in the metabolism of foreign substances and as endogenous metabolites. Epoxide hydrolases (EHs) are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of epoxides to yield the corresponding diols. LÄS MER
5. Mechanism of enzymes involved in leukotriene C4 biosynthesis
Sammanfattning : Cysteinyl leukotrienes (cys-LTs) are potent proinflammatory mediators associated with various diseases including asthma and allergic rhinitis. Leukotriene C4 synthase (LTC4S) and microsomal glutathione transferase 2 (MGST2) catalyze conjugation of the epoxide intermediate LTA4 with GSH to form LTC4, the parent compound of the cys-LTs.
