1. Biomimetic Membranes: : Molecular Structure and Stability Studies by Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : In the research presented in this licentiate thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy, VSFS, combined with the Langmuir trough has been utilized to investigate Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposited mono- and bilayers of phospholipids. Their molecular structure, stability, and hydration were probed to gain additional understanding of important properties aiming at facilitating the use of such layers as model systems for biological membranes. 2. RNA in model lipid membranes - interactions in bulk and at surfaces
Sammanfattning : The work presented in the thesis “RNA in model lipid membranes- interactions in bulk and at surfaces” aims to characterize the interaction between RNA and model membranes with different properties as well as to determine if ssRNA associate with model membranes in different ways. Several techniques have been used to characterize these systems, including quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Langmuir film balance in combination with neutron reflectometry and fluorescence microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). 3. Solid-State NMR Characterization of Lipid Membranes
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the study of lipid bilayer systems by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. Two-dimensional 1H-13C separated local field experiments under magic-angle spinning were employed to investigate structural and dynamical modifications of cell membranes, resulting from the addition of compounds with some biological relevance. 4. Model Membranes and Their Interactions with Native and Artificial Lipoproteins
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis arises from build-up of plaque in the blood, can result in cardiovascular disease and is the largest killer in the west. Low- and high-density lipoproteins are involved in the disease development by depositing and removing lipids to and from artery walls. LÄS MER
5. Nanosized Bilayer Disks as Model Membranes for Interaction Studies
Sammanfattning : PEG-lipid stabilized bilayer disks have been found in lipid mixtures containing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-lipids where the combination of a high bending rigidity and low PEG-lipid/lipid miscibility favours disk formation. The disks are planar and circular in shape and their long-term stability is excellent. LÄS MER
