1. Olfactory genomics of bark- and ambrosia beetles : Evolution and function of chemoreceptors
Sammanfattning : Insect behaviours, such as host and mate selection, are often mediated by chemical cues. The chemical cuesare detected by large and rapidly evolving families of chemoreceptors which include odorant receptors (ORs),gustatory receptors (GRs) and ionotropic receptors (IRs). LÄS MER
2. Chemical signalling in the Drosophila brain : GABA, short neuropeptide F and their receptors
Sammanfattning : Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and short neuropeptide F (sNPF) are widespread signalling molecules in the brain of insects. In order to understand more about the signalling and to some extent start to unravel the functional roles of these two substances, this study has examined the locations of the transmitters and their receptors in the brain of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster using immunocytochemistry in combination with Gal4/UAS technique. 3. From sequence to function : Comparative studies of insect olfactory receptors
Sammanfattning : In insects airborne odors are detected by the odorant receptors (ORs) and ionotropic receptors (IRs), located on the dendritic membrane of the olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) housed in olfactory sensilla. The OR and IR gene families show high plasticity in lineage expansion and contraction following the birth-and-death evolutionary model. LÄS MER
4. Molecular biology of barnacle Balanus improvisus settlement
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate molecular mechanisms of various aspects of barnacle settlement, using the acorn barnacle Balanus improvisus. This barnacle is a common fouling species and a model organism for studies in settlement biology, in particular in relation to antifouling research. LÄS MER
5. The γ-aminobutyric acid and proton signaling systems in the zebrafish brain : Characterization and effect of stress
Sammanfattning : The central nervous system of vertebrates is continuously processing sensory information relayed from the periphery, integrating it and producing outputs transmitted to efferents. In the brain, neurons employ an array of messenger molecules to filter afferent information and finely regulate synaptic transmission. LÄS MER
