  1. 11. Insulin Resistance and Inflammation as Risk Factors for Congestive Heart Failure

    Författare :Erik Ingelsson; Lars Lind; Johan Ärnlöv; Johan Sundström; Jan Östergren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Geriatric nursing; congestive heart failure; insulin resistance; inflammation; obesity; blood sedimentation; apolipoproteins; antioxidants; beta carotene; oxidative stress; registries; epidemiology; risk factors; Äldrevård; Older people and ageing; Äldre och åldrande;

    Sammanfattning : Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and the identification of modifiable risk factors is crucial in order to diminish suffering of this common disease. The primary aim of this thesis was to investigate novel metabolic risk factors for CHF, with a focus on insulin resistance and inflammation. LÄS MER

  2. 12. WISP-2 - A Novel Adipokine Related to Obesity and Insulin resistance

    Författare :John Grünberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adipose tissue; BMP4; Canonical WNT pathway; Insulin Resistance; Obesity; PPARγ; Type 2 Diabetes; WISP2;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is increasing worldwide at an epidemic rate and is expected to reach 592 million inflicted individuals by 2035 as compared to 382 million in 2013. Obesity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance, defined as an impaired cellular effect of insulin, and this precedes the development of T2D. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Carbohydrate-Rich Foods in the Treatment of the Insulin Resistance Syndrome : Studies of the Importance of the Glycaemic Index and Dietary Fibre

    Författare :Anette Järvi; Gabriele Riccardi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; diabetes; insulin resistance; carbohydrates; starch; glycaemic index; dietary fibre; postprandial; second-meal; glucose; insulin; triacylglycerol; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Sammanfattning : The glycaemic responses to various carbohydrate-rich foods are partly dependent on the rate at which the carbohydrate is digested and absorbed. The glycaemic index (GI) is a way of ranking foods according to their glycaemic response and is recommended as a useful tool in identifying starch-rich foods that give the most favourable glycaemic response. 4. 14. Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle. With special reference to interstitial insulin and glycerol

    Författare :Mikaela Sjöstrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; insulin resistance; skeletal muscle; microdialysis; interstitial insulin; interstitial glycerol;

    Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance is a central feature of type 2 diabetes and obesity and is associated with cardiovascular disease. In insulin-resistant muscle, the insulin-mediated glucose uptake is decreased.The delivery of insulin to the interstitial fluid of human skeletal muscle has previously not been investigated. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation

    Författare :Ulf Risérus; Keith Frayn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Metabolic syndrome; dietary fatty acids; conjugated linoleic acid; insulin resistance; oxidative stress; inflammation; cardiovascular disease; dyslipidemia; abdominal obesity; type 2 diabetes; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Nutrition; näringslära;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. LÄS MER
