  1. 11. Experimental Studies on the Regulation of Pigment Dynamics in Phytoplankton and Copepods by Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients

    Författare :Lies Van Nieuwerburgh; Pauli Snoeijs; Ulf Båmstedt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Astaxanthin; Baltic Sea; carotenoids; diatoms; eutrophication; food web; mesocosms; microalgae; M74 syndrome; oxidative stress; phytoplankton blooms; zooplankton; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the role of dissolved inorganic nutrients in generating changes in phytoplankton community and pigment composition and if such changes can affect the production of the antioxidant astaxanthin in the ecosystem via pelagic copepods. The background of my studies is the possible relationship between eutrophication and a reproductive disturbance in Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon (M74), which is associated with astaxanthin and thiamine deficiencies and oxidative stress. 2. 12. Provitamin A Carotenoids in Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato

    Författare :Anton Bengtsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; orange-fleshed sweet potato; food processing; high-performance liquid chromatography; β-carotene; β-carotene uptake; Caco-2 cells; provitamin A carotenoids; vitamin A deficiency; iron;

    Sammanfattning : Vitamin A deficiency is a major nutritional disorder in a large number of developing countries. The disorder is mainly caused by an inadequate intake of preformed vitamin A and provitamin A carotenoids from the diet. It is also recognized that vitamin A deficiency and iron deficiency tend to coexist in many population groups. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Improving vitamin A nutrition in low-income countries. In vitro bioaccessibility of provitamin A carotenoids in biofortified orange-fleshed sweet potato

    Författare :Anton Bengtsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioaccessibility; β-carotene; biofortification; provitamin A carotenoids; coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy; vitamin A deficiency; food processing; orange-fleshed sweet potato; in vitro digestion; Caco-2 cells;

    Sammanfattning : Vitamin A deficiency is a major nutritional disorder in a large number of low-income countries that is caused by an inadequate intake of preformed vitamin A and provitamin A carotenoids in the diet. The objective of the present thesis was to evaluate orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) as a biofortified food source of provitamin A carotenoids with a potential to be included in a diet for alleviating vitamin A deficiency. 4. 14. In vitro accessibility of provitamin A carotenoids in vegetables and fruits - Effects of different process and preparation methods and estimation of vitamin A activity

    Författare :Ellen Hedrén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; in vitro accessibility; provitamin A carotenoids; lactic acid fermentation; food matrix; cell wall degrading enzymes; vegetables; vitamin A activity; beta-carotene; red palm oil; fruits;

    Sammanfattning : Vitamin A deficiency is a major nutritional problem in many developing countries, caused chiefly by a diet with low retinol content. The bioefficacy of provitamin A carotenoids in plant foods is claimed to be insufficient to maintain a satisfactory vitamin A status. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Content and In Vitro Accessibility of Provitamin. A Carotenoids in Some Tanzanian Vegetables and Fruits Effects of Traditional Processing and Preparation, and Influence on Vitamin A Status

    Författare :Generose Ishengoma Mulokozi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; in vitro accessibility; sunflower oil; solar cabinet drying; women; all-trans-beta-carotene; alpha-carotene; open sun-drying; vitamin A; provitamin A carotenoids; plasma; breast milk; fruits; vegetables; red palm oil; Tanzania; beta-cryptoxanthin; pregnancy; children;

    Sammanfattning : Vitamin A deficiency is among the major nutritional problems in Tanzania as in many developing countries. It mainly affects children and pregnant and lactating women. The basic cause of this problem is related to the diet, which contains little preformed vitamin A and plant foods with a low content and bioavailability of provitamin A carotenoids. LÄS MER
