1. Zooplankton response to cyanotoxins
Sammanfattning : Mass development of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is common in many lakes and coastal waters worldwide as a result of an increased nutrient loading. These blooms of cyanobacteria are undesirable for several reasons; thick mats of algae and unpleasant odour reduces the recreational values, bad taste reduces the quality of drinking water and the potent toxins produced by some species of cyanobacteria endanger human health. 2. Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics
Sammanfattning : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). 3. Food Quality for Zooplankton in Humic Lakes
Sammanfattning : Food quality affects growth, reproduction and community structure of zooplankton, and has implications for nutrient cycling and the transfer of energy and matter in aquatic food chains. While the issue of food quality in clear water lakes has received great recent attention, studies on food quality for zooplankton in humic lakes are scarce. LÄS MER
4. Effects of contaminant mixtures on marine zooplankton diversity and function
Sammanfattning : Chemicals have important roles in our society and can be used as ingredients in personal care products, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, as well as be components of fuels used in cars or ships. More than 350 000 chemicals and mixtures have been registered for use, which only covers a part of all the chemicals that we may come into contact with. LÄS MER
