1. Structural and Electrochemical Properties of Functionalized Nanocellulose Materials and Their Biocompatibility
Sammanfattning : Nanocellulose has received considerable interest during the last decade because it is renewable and biodegradable, and has excellent mechanical properties, nanoscale dimensions and wide functionalization possibilities. It is considered to be a unique and versatile platform on which new functional materials can be based. LÄS MER
2. Bioinformatic studies of genetic variation at known, novel and candidate blood group loci
Sammanfattning : Access to compatible blood for transfusion is a prerequisite for modern health care. The compatibility is limited by the presence of antibodies to blood group antigens, polymorphic protein and carbohydrate structures, on the surface of the red blood cell. Blood group antigens arise from genetic variation in the genes underlying their expression. LÄS MER
3. Surface modification of cellulose materials : from wood pulps to artificial blood vessels
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the improvement of two radically different cellulose materials, paper and artificial blood vessels, constructed from two diverse cellulose sources, wood pulp and Acetobacter xylinum. The improvement of both materials was possible due to the natural affinity of the hemicellulose xyloglucan for cellulose. LÄS MER
4. Development of new blood banking strategies for processing and storage of red blood cell components
Sammanfattning : The field of red blood cell (RBC) components has been quite uneventful during the last few decades, save for the experimental exploration of alternative additive solution compositions. The reason is likely that the RBC quality has been good enough and the shelf-life of conventional RBC concentrates (RCC) has been long enough to not really motivate the workload that any dramatic changes would implicate. 5. Infections Related to the Use of Medical Devices and Changes in the Oropharyngeal Flora
Sammanfattning : Background: Humans exist in mutualistic balance with a large range of microbiota. Illness and hospitalization can disturb this balance and contribute to hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), which occur most often in critically ill patients. LÄS MER
