1. Bio-optics, satellite remote sensing and Baltic Sea ecosystems : Applications for monitoring and management
Sammanfattning : Earth observation satellites cover large areas with frequent temporal repetition and provide us with new insight into ocean and coastal processes. Ocean colour measurements from satellite remote sensing are linked to the bio-optics, which refers to the light interactions with living organisms and dissolved and suspended constituents in the aquatic environment. 2. Submerged macrophytes in shallow eutrophic lakes - regulating factors and ecosystem effects
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I have studied factors that regulate submerged macrophyte abundance, morphology and distribution in shallow eutrophic lakes, and how submerged macrophytes may affect the ecosystem. Light attenuation through the water column (turbidity and water depth) is probably not the most important factor regulating the distribution of submerged vegetation in macrophyte dominated shallow eutrophic lakes, e. 3. An inductive approach to the modeling of lake water quality in dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes
Sammanfattning : To explore the interaction between elements of the watershed and lake water quality, a database large enough to approximate the generic population of dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes is assembled and analyzed with multivariate statistical methods in an inductive top-down approach. Utilizing the analytical capabilities of geographical information systems, the spatially distributed characteristics of land cover, soil and bedrock elements are identified and parameterized with respect to element morphology and hydrology. 4. Predictive Models and Eutrophication Effects of Fish Farms
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture has become one of the fastest growing food industries in the world. Like many other industries, aquaculture, and especially fish farms may cause negative effects on the environment, such as eutrophication, which is recognised as a major threat to aquatic ecosystems. 5. Fish foraging under visual constraints
Sammanfattning : Visual conditions are changing in several different ways. Some lakes are getting turbid due to eutrophication or erosion while others are getting browner due to brownification. These two types of visual degradation results in completely different optical properties of lakes. LÄS MER
