  1. 1. Molecular and Metabolic Aspects of Plant and Bacterial Salt Tolerance

    Författare :Peter Olsson; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; metabolism; gamma-aminobutyric acid; Nicotiana tabacum; salinity; hypoxia; heamoglobin; microarray; glycine betaine; NaCl; GABA; Vitreoscilla; calmodulin; Esherichia coli; tobacco; Biokemi; Metabolism; Biochemistry; Arabidopsis;

    Sammanfattning : Salt stress is one of the historically as well as potentially largest agriculture problem humans have faced. Researchers have investigated and tried to solve this problem for a long time. Over 20 reviews have been written on this topic the last five years. LÄS MER

  2. 2. NADH:quinone oxidoreductase: the black box of the respiratory chain

    Författare :Robert Roth; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NADH:quinone oxidoreductase; Complex I; electron transport; membrane protein; ubiquinone; respiratory chain; respiration; metabolism; Metabolism; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Complex I or NADH:quinone oxidoreductase the largest, most complex and least understood of the five membrane-bound enzyme complexes constituting the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The enzyme is present in all types of organisms, from bacteria to mammals. LÄS MER

  3. 3. An Investigation of Peroxidase Activity in Biomimetic and Biological Systems

    Författare :Ekaterina Ryabova; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metabolism; Metabolism; enzymologi; Proteiner; enzymology; Proteins; hemoglobin; catalysis; peptide; peroxidase; protoporphyrin IX; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : In order to create a heme environment which permits biomimicry of heme-containing plant peroxidases and investigate the role played by the vinyl side chains of the porphyrin ring on the stability and, possibly, catalytic activity of model compounds, a number of new synthetic microperoxidases -– hemin-6(7)-gly-his methyl ester (HGH) and hemin-6(7)-gly-gly-his methyl ester (HGGH) and hemin-6,7-bis(gly-gly-his methyl ester) (H2GGH) as well as mesohemin-6(7)-gly-gly-his methyl ester (MGGH) and deuterohemin-6(7)-gly-gly-his methyl ester (DGGH) have been prepared by condensation of a peptide residue with the propionic side chains of hemin, mesohemin and deuterohemin, respectively. Reactivity studies towards different organic and inorganic substrates showed that not only five- but also six-coordinate hemin peptide complexes catalyze the oxidation of substrates by H2O2. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Silicon Nanowire Based Sensors for Bacterial Tests

    Författare :Yingtao Yu; Zhen Zhang; Mihai Adrian Ionescu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; silicon nanowire; field-effect transistor; antibiotic susceptibility test; bacterial metabolism; nanoelectromechanical sensor; multiplexed detection;

    Sammanfattning : Rapid and reliable antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) is urgently required to diagnose bacterial infectious diseases and avoid antibiotic misuse, providing valuable information on the efficacy of antibiotic agents and their dosages for treatment. However, the currently employed phenotypic ASTs normally demand the growth of bacteria into colonies, which usually takes more than two days. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Bacterial use of allochthonous organic carbon for respiration and growth in boreal freshwater systems

    Författare :Martin Berggren; Mats Jansson; Michael L. Pace; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :lakes; streams; boreal; bacterial respiration; bacterial production; bacterial growth efficiency; allochthonous organic carbon; low molecular weight compounds; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : Aquatic systems worldwide receive large amounts of organic carbon from terrestrial sources. This ‘allochthonous’ organic carbon (AlloOC) affects critical physical and chemical properties of freshwater ecosystems, with consequences for food web structures and exchange of greenhouse gases with the atmosphere.
