6. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus
Sammanfattning : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 8. Interactions between neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, N-methyl-aspartate receptors and beta-amyloid in the brain of genetically modified mice : implications for Alheimer's disease
Sammanfattning : The amyloid hypothesis is one of the leading theories in the search for the cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is based on the theory that hyperproduction and accumulation of amyloid betapeptide (Abeta) in the brain triggers the disruption of neuronal and synaptic function, thereby ultimately leading to neurodegeneration and dementia. Some of the crucial questions are if Abeta has a neuronal function in the brain and how it interacts with the neurotransmitter system in AD. LÄS MER
9. CNS Targets for GH and IGF-1 : Emphasis on Their Regulation in Relation to Cognitive Processes
Sammanfattning : The interest for the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis and its role in the central nervous system (CNS) has grown during the past decade. GH has been associated with psychological functions as sleep, mood, general well-being and learning and memory. LÄS MER
10. Acute toluene effects on neurotransmission in the central nervous system
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to develop a method to study the effects of toluene in the central nervous system of the rat. Microdialysis on awake rats was used to study toluene's effects on the transmission of dopamine, acetylcholine, glutamate and aspartate in the striatum, and on GABA in the striatum, the cerebellum and the globus pallidus.
