1. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha as a target cytokine in vascular disease
Sammanfattning : Inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis. One of the most potent pro-inflammatory cytokines is tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a), a cytokine identified to have a pathogenic role in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). LÄS MER
2. Regulation of human macrophage gene expression by oxidized low density lipoprotein. Studies on tumor necrosis factor-a and global gene expression profiles
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial and progressive disease that is characterized by a focal thickening of the arteries caused by accumulation of lipoproteins, extracellular matrix, and the migration and proliferation of various cell types. Among the cells found in atherosclerotic lesions are macrophages, which accumulate lipids and are transformed into foam cells. LÄS MER
3. Antigen presenting cells in autoimmune diabetes: phenotype, function and modulation by Linomide
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to better understand the role of antigen presenting cells (APC) in the development of diabetes in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse. We have shown that DC and Mphi that infiltrate the islets of Langerhans produce tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), a cytokine known to contribute to the pathogenesis in the early stages of diabetes development. 4. Islet xenotransplantation : An immunological study in the pig-to-mouse model
Sammanfattning : Successful clinical xenotransplantation, i.e., transplantation between species, would eliminate the shortage of donor organs. In order to study the acute cellular rejection reaction following discordant xenogeneic transplantation, an experimental pig-to- mouse islet xenotransplantation model was established. LÄS MER
5. Regulation of the platelet-derived growth factor β-receptor
Sammanfattning : Growth factors are important signalling molecules, regulating cell growth, as well as cell movement, differentiation and apoptosis. They bind to specific receptors on the cell surface causing activation of the receptors. Activated receptors then attract adaptor molecules that brings the signal further into the cell. LÄS MER
