  1. 1. Molecular mechanisms of estrogen and antiestrogen action

    Författare :Tomas Barkhem; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Estrogen receptor; SHBG; tamoxifen; raloxifene; pS2; p1 60 coactivator; SRC-1; TIF-2;

    Sammanfattning : Estrogen is a key regulatory hormone that affects numerous physiological processes. The estrogen receptors (ER), ER alpha and ER beta, play a central role in mediating the effects of both estrogens and antiestrogens. Estrogen signaling has proven to be multifaceted and the precise mechanism of action remains in many cases elusive. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Oxygen-dependent regulation of transcription by the hypoxia-inducible factor-1

    Författare :Jorge Lira Ruas; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Hypoxia; HIF-1; protein degradation; transcription; coactivators; CBP; subcellular localization; C1-tetrahydrofolate synthase;

    Sammanfattning : Under limited oxygen availability (hypoxia) cells undergo rapid reprogramming in order to survive in the new environment until normoxic conditions are re-established. The observation that hypoxia can induce the expression of genes involved in erythropoiesis, angiogenesis and glucose metabolism among others, led to the identification of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) as a master regulator of the hypoxia-response pathway. 3. 3. Gene environment-interaction and cardiovascular phenotype in obesity and diabetes

    Författare :Shafaat Hussain; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Although a large body of evidence supports the notion that genes determine cardio-metabolic traits and outcomes, the non-genetic regulation of these events has recently gained increasing attention. Plastic chemical modifications of DNA-histone complexes defined epigenetic changes regulate gene expression by modifying chromatin accessibility to transcription factors. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Studies on a novel cytosolic/nuclear binding protein for the eicosanoid 12(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid

    Författare :Helena Herbertsson; Örjan Wrange; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) are lipoxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid. HETEs were long considered to have few or no important biological function - a view that proved to be incorrect. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Modulation of the HPA axis alters the sensitivity of the cochlea to acoustic trauma

    Författare :Yeasmin Tahera; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HPA axis; corticosterone; glucocorticoid receptor; NFêB; spiral ganglion neurons; cochlea; acoustic trauma; paraventricular nucleus;

    Sammanfattning : The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA axis) regulates nearly all neuroendocrine responses of the body. An active HPA axis is crucial to maintaining homeostasis. An altered reactivity of the HPA axis can affect several physiological systems including the auditory system. LÄS MER
