  1. 1. The Threat to the Baltic Salmon - a Combination of Persistent Pollutants, Parasite and Oxidative Stress

    Författare :Maria Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Salmo salar; Atlantic salmon; polychlorinated biphenyls; Animal ecology; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; lake Vänern; lake Vättern; Baltic Sea; Eubothrium crassum; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; AHR; consumption advice; stable isotopes; astaxanthin; EROD; M74; antioxidants; biomagnification; cestodes; parasites; DDT; Djurekologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; PCB;

    Sammanfattning : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. 2. 2. Thiamin (vitamin B1) in the aquatic food web

    Författare :Emil Fridolfsson; Samuel Hylander; Michael T. Brett; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; zooplankton; thiamin; transfer; food web dynamics; micronutrient; vitamin; Baltic Sea; community composition; M74; salmon; B1; växtplankton; djurplankton; tiamin; överföring; födoväv; mikronäringsämne; vitamin; Östersjön; B1; lax; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Thiamin (vitamin B1) is required for several life-sustaining processes in most organisms and cells, e.g. in the conversion of food to energy. It also serves as an antioxidant and is important for proper nerve signaling. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web

    Författare :Norbert Häubner; Pauli Snoeijs; Jon Ågren; Rhena Schumann; Markku Viitasalo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Baltic Sea; carotenoids; astaxanthin; tocopherols; Vitamin E; thiamine; Vitamin B1; pelagic food web; eutrophication; M74; phytoplankton; zooplankton; sprat; Sprattus sprattus balticus; herring; Clupea harengus; salmon; Salmo salar; cod; Gadus morhua; High Performance Liquid Chromatography HPLC ; electrochemical detection ECD ;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 4. 4. Thiamine dynamics in the pelagic food web of the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Peter Sylvander; Snoeijs Pauline; Anders Bignert; Dale C Honeyfield; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Thiamine; Vitamin B1; Baltic Sea; M74; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Thiamine (vitamin B1) is involved in several basal metabolic processes. It is an essential compound for many organisms and in aquatic systems it is mainly produced by phytoplankton and prokaryotes and transferred to higher trophic levels through grazing and predation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Experimental Studies on the Regulation of Pigment Dynamics in Phytoplankton and Copepods by Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients

    Författare :Lies Van Nieuwerburgh; Pauli Snoeijs; Ulf Båmstedt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Astaxanthin; Baltic Sea; carotenoids; diatoms; eutrophication; food web; mesocosms; microalgae; M74 syndrome; oxidative stress; phytoplankton blooms; zooplankton; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the role of dissolved inorganic nutrients in generating changes in phytoplankton community and pigment composition and if such changes can affect the production of the antioxidant astaxanthin in the ecosystem via pelagic copepods. The background of my studies is the possible relationship between eutrophication and a reproductive disturbance in Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon (M74), which is associated with astaxanthin and thiamine deficiencies and oxidative stress.
