  1. 1. Silicon cycling in the Baltic Sea : Trends and budget of dissolved silica

    Författare :Liana Papush; Åsa Danielsson; Lars Rahm; Petra Tallberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Dissolved silica; trends; nutrient; nutrient ratios; diatoms; Redfield; limitation; eutrophication; riverine load; budget; fluxes; accumulation; retention; optimisation; Baltic Sea; Löst kisel; trender; näringsämne; näringsämnens kvoter; kiselalger; Redfield; tillväxtbegränsning; övergödning; flodtillförsel; budget; flöden; ackumulering; retention; optimering; Östersjön; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : The dissolved silicon (DSi) has a crucial role for growth of a large group of primary producers – diatoms and, hence, impact on functioning of the aquatic food web. This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of the modifications of the DSi cycling in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The importance of biodiversity for ecosystem processes in sediments : experimental examples from the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Johan Näslund; Jonas Gunnarsson; Sara Sjöling; Nils Kautsky; Antoine Grémare; Stockholms universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Aquatic sediments are, by surface, the largest habitat on Earth. A wide diversity of organisms inhabit these sediments and by their actions they have a large influence on and also mediate many ecosystem processes. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation researches how perspectives in western industrial societies communicate about and give meaning to environmental degradation through case studies on the causes and effects of cultural eutrophication—namely nutrient pollution, algal blooms, and dead zones—in the Baltic Sea. Utilizing this approach, this dissertation addresses the ecological problems of cultural eutrophication in marine ecosystems by exposing normative claims humans make about the Baltic Sea and its contents as well as detailing how seas that exceed human expectations may offer insights into negotiating differing perspectives, discrepancies in power, and ways of being among humans and non-humans in marine environments. 5. 5. Thiamin (vitamin B1) in the aquatic food web

    Författare :Emil Fridolfsson; Samuel Hylander; Michael T. Brett; Linnéuniversitetet; []

    Sammanfattning : Thiamin (vitamin B1) is required for several life-sustaining processes in most organisms and cells, e.g. in the conversion of food to energy. It also serves as an antioxidant and is important for proper nerve signaling. LÄS MER
