  1. 21. Birds as a Model for Comparative Genomic Studies

    Författare :Axel Künstner; Hans Ellegren; Hanna Johannesson; Chris Ponting; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Birds; Selection; Gene expression; Sequence evolution; Next-generation sequencing; Comparative genomics; Molecular evolution; Genomics; Substitution Rates; Non-coding DNA; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Comparative genomics provides a tool to investigate large biological datasets, i.e. genomic datasets. In my thesis I focused on inferring patterns of selection in coding and non-coding regions of avian genomes. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Painfully Energetic : A tale of two proteins potentially connected

    Författare :Eva Sperling; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Complex I; Mrp-antiporter; Membrane bound hydrogenases; TRP ion channels; TRPA1; thermosensation; chemosensation; 23Na-NMR;

    Sammanfattning : NADH:quinone oxidoreductase (Complex I) is the first enzyme of the respiratory chain and is involved in energy conservation generating an electro-chemical gradient across a membrane. The enzyme can be divided into a membrane spanning domain and a hydrophilic domain, which protrudes from the membrane. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Prokaryotic respiratory supercomplexes : Studies of interactions between complexes III and IV

    Författare :Olga Stah; Pia Ädelroth; Petra Hellwig; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioenergetics; membrane protein; bacterial respiration; electron transport chain; supercomplex; cytochrome c oxidase; membrane-anchored cytochrome c; cytochrome bc1 complex; electron transfer; proton transfer; time-resolved spectroscopy; apoptosis; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Respiratory processes for cellular energy conversion are carried out by the membrane-associated enzymes of the electron transfer chain (ETC). In recent years there has been emerging data showing that the members of the ETC organize into higher-level assemblies called supercomplexes (SCs) whose functional relevance is not yet fully understood. 4. 24. Migration and quality of landlocked Atlantic salmon smolt : Implications for conservation and management

    Författare :Johnny R Norrgård; Eva Bergman; Larry A Greenberg; Monika Schmitz; Martyn Lucas; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; acoustic telemetry; hatchery; life history; migration mortality; regulated rivers; Salmo salar; salmon; smolt; trout; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Atlantic salmon Salmo salar has a complex life cycle, including long migrations and habitat shifts for both juveniles and adults. As such, salmon populations are vulnerable to habitat degradation and fragmentation along their migratory routes. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Genetic and Ecological Consequences of Fish Releases : With Focus on Supportive Breeding of Brown Trout Salmo trutta and Translocation of European Eel Anguilla anguilla

    Författare :Johan Dannewitz; Jacob Höglund; Erik Petersson; Ian Fleming; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; conservation; fishery management; panmixia; genetic variation; effective population size; hatchery selection; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Although the practice of releasing fish into the wild is common in the management and conservation of fish populations, the success of release programmes and the potential harmful genetic and ecological effects that may follow are rarely considered. This thesis focuses on genetic and ecological consequences of fish releases, exemplified by supportive breeding of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and translocation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla).
