  1. 1. Biological risk factors for crime : Adverse perinatal events and psychophysiology

    Författare :Sofi Oskarsson; Catherine Tuvblad; Henrik Larsson; Marianne Kristiansson; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Biological Risk Factors; Crime; Criminal Offender; Biological Criminology; Adverse Perinatal Events; Psychophysiology; Psychopathy;

    Sammanfattning : Biological risk factors for crime have been largely neglected within main-stream criminology. However, a large body of research has over the past few decades converged on the conclusion that it is important to consider biological risk factors for crime, as they may help to inform theory and etiology. 2. 2. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Författare :Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 3. 3. Characterization of PAC-contaminated soil with the focus on availability, leachability and biological activities

    Författare :Monika M. Lam; Magnus Engwall; Maria Larsson; Patrik Andersson; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polycyclic aromatic compounds; Availability; Mobility; Soil; Risk assessment; AhR-mediated activity; ER-mediated activity;

    Sammanfattning : Current risk assessments of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs)-contaminated soil are often based on the 16 priority PAHs and do not consider availability of PACs in soil sufficiently. This may lead to uncertainties of the assessment, since important contaminants can be overlooked and only a small fraction of contaminants is available for the uptake for organisms. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) : possible risk of human exposure, and the effect and function in diatoms

    Författare :Sea-Yong Kim; Sara Rydberg; Sandra Banack; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The toxic secondary metabolites β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) produced by phytoplankton groups such as cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates are known to cause neurotoxicity in vertebrates. BMAA has been linked to development of the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC) and Alzheimer's disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Factors modifying cellular response to ionizing radiation

    Författare :Lei Cheng; Andrzej Wojcik; Siamak Haghdoost; Lovisa Lundholm; Penelope A. Jeggo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Radiation biology; DNA damage; gene expression; alpha particles; X-rays; mixed beams; gamma rays; hypothermia; dose rate.; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : Many physical factors influence the biological effect of exposure to ionizing radiation, including radiation quality, dose rate and temperature. This thesis focuses on how these factors influence the outcome of exposure and the mechanisms behind the cellular response. LÄS MER
