6. Pulmonary Drug Absorption : In vitro and in vivo investigations of drug absorption across the lung barrier and its relation to drug physicochemical properties
Sammanfattning : Although, pulmonary drug delivery is a well established means for targeting of drugs to the lungs for the treatment of respiratory diseases as well as for the systemic delivery of volatile anesthetic agents, drug absorption kinetics in the lung have not been subjected to extensive research. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate drug absorption characteristics of the lung barrier, using the isolated and perfused rat lung model and in vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats. 7. Intestinal barriers to oral drug absorption: Cytochrome P450 3A and ABC-transport proteins
Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis was to study two intestinal barriers to oral drug bioavailability, drug efflux proteins of the ABC-transporter family, and in particular ABCB1/P-glycoprotein (Pgp), and the drug metabolizing enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. At the onset of this thesis, similarities between CYP3A4 and Pgp in terms of their tissue distribution and gene regulation, along with overlapping substrate specificities, had generated the hypothesis that CYP3A4 and Pgp may have a complementary function and thus form a coordinated intestinal barrier to drug absorption and gut wall metabolism. 8. Factors Influencing Iron Dialyzability and Uptake in In Vitro Models
Sammanfattning : The availability or iron from a meal is influenced by numerous factors. This thesis deals with three of them: organic acids, plant proteins (pea and soy), and transit time through the stomach and small intestine. LÄS MER
9. Regulation of differentiation during the Giardia life cycle : An insight into the molecular control
Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis (syn. G. lamblia, G. duodenalis) is an intestinal protozoan parasite that causes diarrheal infections worldwide. LÄS MER
10. In vitro Bioaccessibility of Carotenes: Influence of microstructure in tomato and carrot as modified by processing
Sammanfattning : Carotenes are a group of fat-soluble pigments in many fruits and vegetables associated with several important biological effects, like protection against the development of some forms of cancer and cardiovascular disease. The carotene bioavailability in plant foods, i.e. LÄS MER
