16. Studies of Giardia-host interactions: role of cysteine-rich surface proteins
Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a eukaryotic parasite that colonizes the small intestine of humans and animals causing the diarrheal disease known as giardiasis. This parasite is not invasive and does not internalize into host cells but it rather attaches to the brush border surface of the small intestine disrupting the epithelial barrier. LÄS MER
17. On cell-penetrating peptides and cell-junction interactions
Sammanfattning : Cell-penetrating peptides have the remarkable ability to carry hydrophilic macromolecules over the cellular membrane in an energy and protein independent manner. To synthesise and characterise new variants of cell-penetrating peptides, mainly aimed at finding analogues with minimised side effects and efficient cellular delivery, was one of the two main objectives of this thesis. 18. Particle Transcytosis Across the Human Intestinal Epithelium : Model Development and Target Identification for Improved Drug Delivery
Sammanfattning : The use of nano- and micro-particulate carriers as delivery systems for oral vaccines has been under investigation for several decades. Surprisingly little is known of their uptake in the human intestine, despite the fact that substantial improvement is required to achieve adequate immune responses in man after oral administration. 19. Drug transport and metabolism in in vitro models of the human intestine : By Shamsi D. Raeissi
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis was to study the mechanisms of drug transport and metabolism in two different in vitro models of the human intestine: monolayers of human intestinal epithelial cell lines and intestinal microsomes. The first part of the thesis shows that Caco-2 cell monolayers are a good model for mechanistic studies of drug transport. LÄS MER
20. Health Promoting Effects of Bioactive Peptides in Milk - Studies on Cultured Normal Cells and Cancer Cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the bioactive peptides lactoferricin and ubiquitin and findings suggesting that they have ability to modify the risk of cancer. It is known that components in bovine milk may improve human health and modify the risk of diseases. Examples of such compounds are bioactive peptides, i.e. LÄS MER
