  1. 1. Catching Mercury : Mercury in Lake Vänern and Swedish catchments

    Författare :Peter Wihlborg; Lars Hylander; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mercury; deposition; budget; sediments; retention; catchments; dating; kvicksilver; deposition; budget; retention; avrinningsområden; datering; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Sammanfattning : Vänern och dess sediment har under 1900-talet varit en av Sveriges mest kvicksilver (Hg) kontaminerade miljöer. 47 sedimentprofiler tagna 2001 analyserades for total Hg och temporala och spatiala mönster påvisades. Av den direkta Hg tillförseln 1918-2001 återfinns c:a 30 ton i bottensedimenten. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Mercury cycling in the global marine environment

    Författare :Michelle Nerentorp; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sea ice; air; seasonal and spatial variation; snow; Mercury cycling; seawater; mercury flux;

    Sammanfattning : Mercury is a globally distributed contaminant that exists in the atmosphere in its elemental form as a stable monoatomic gas. Having a residence time of around one year in air allows it to be transported far from emission sources and end up in polar ecosystems. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Unraveling the importance of solid and adsorbed phase mercury speciation for methylmercury formation, evasion and bioaccumulation

    Författare :Sofi Jonsson; Erik Björn; Ulf Skyllberg; Erik Lundberg; Per Persson; Robert Mason; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mercury; methylmercury; aquatic systems; estuary; Hg; MeHg; bioaccumulation; methylation; demethylation; evasion; sediment; water; terrestrial sources; atmospheric sources; climate change; eutrophication;

    Sammanfattning : Monomethylmercury, MeHg, is formed under anoxic conditions in waters, sediments and soils and then bioaccumulated and biomagnified in aquatic food webs, negatively effecting both human and wildlife health. It is generally accepted that precipitation of mercury, Hg, and adsorption of Hg to e.g. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Determination of mercury chemical speciation in the presence of low molecular mass thiols and its importance for mercury methylation

    Författare :Van Liem-Nguyen; Erik Björn; Ulf Skyllberg; Cynthia Gilmour; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mercury; methylmercury; LMM thiol; mass spectrometry; biogeochemistry; soil; sediment; ICP; WinSGW; modeling; S XANES; ligand exchange; stability constant; boreal wetlands; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic compound that threatens the well-being of humans and wildlife. It is formed through the methylation of inorganic mercury (HgII) under suboxic/anoxic conditions in soils, sediment and waters. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Studies of an elusive element : processes that influence the net retention of mercury in lake sediments and peatlands

    Författare :Johan Rydberg; Richard Bindler; Carl Lamborg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Mercury; retention; lake sediments; peatlands; environmental archives; sedimentation; diagenesis; vegetation; permafrost; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Because of its toxic nature mercury is a threat to both wildlife and human health, and thus, it is an element of concern in the environment. Currently much of the mercury emitted to the atmosphere is derived from anthropogenic sources – both direct emissions and re-emission of already deposited anthropogenic mercury. LÄS MER
