31. Studies on Nucleic Acids – Structure and Dynamics
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on six papers, Papers I-VI, focusing on the interplay between the stabilizing elements of nucleic acids self-assembly; hydrogen bonding, stacking and solvent effects. In Paper I we investigate how the substitution of the O4' for CH2 in the sugar moiety of adenosine (2'-deoxyaristeromycin) at the A6 position of the Dickerson-Drew dodecamer makes the two modified bases exist in a dynamic equilibrium between Hoogsteen and Watson-Crick base pairing in the NMR time scale. Sammanfattning : Ultrafast electron microscope (UEM), a combination of transmission electron microscopy and laser-based pump-probe techniques, facilitates ultrafast imaging, diffraction, and electron-spectroscopy with high spatial resolution. 33. High-quality InP on Si and concepts for monolithic photonic integration
Sammanfattning : As the age of Moore’s law is drawing to a close, continuing increase in computing performance is becoming increasingly hard‐earned, while demand for bandwidth is insatiable. One way of dealing with this challenge is the integration of active photonic material with Si, allowing high‐speed optical inter‐ and intra‐chip connects on one hand, and the economies of scale of the CMOS industry in optical communications on the other. 34. First-principles description of planar faults in metals and alloys
Sammanfattning : Phase interface and stacking fault are two common planar defects in metallic materials. In the present thesis, the interfacial energy and the generalized stacking fault energy of random alloys are investigated using density functional theory formulated within the exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTO) method in combination with the coherent-potential approximation (CPA). 35. First-principles investigations of planar defects
Sammanfattning : Two types of planar defects, phase interface and stacking fault, are addressed in this thesis. The investigation is mainly carried out for stainless steels which are fundamental materials in modern society. For the phase interface, we investigate the metallic bcc/bcc and fcc/bcc phase interfaces. LÄS MER
