  1. 6. The role of ABC transporters and inflammation in drug-resistant epilepsy

    Författare :Lora Deuitch Weidner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores two pathologies thought to be related to drug resistance in epilepsy that may themselves be causally related: 1) overexpression of drug transporters in capillaries and 2) inflammation. With regard to the first hypothesis, overexpression of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), at the blood-brain barrier are thought to contribute to drug resistance in epilepsy. 2. 7. Inhibition of mPGES-1 as therapeutic strategy in inflammation and cancer

    Författare :Filip Bergqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is an inflammatory and oncogenic lipid mediator. It is mainly formed via metabolism of arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2) and the terminal enzyme microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1). LÄS MER

  3. 8. Nitric oxide donors in labor management

    Författare :Maria Bullarbo; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :cervical ripening; labor induction; nitric oxide donor; retained placenta;

    Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Nitric oxide donors in labor management Maria Bullarbo Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Institute of Clinical Sciences Background: Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical with ultra-short half-life synthesized from L- arginine by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS), is in the human involved in many physiological and pathophysiological processes, including different reproductive processes. During pregnancy NO is produced endogenously in the human uterine cervix and placenta. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Role of prostaglandin E2 as a neuro-immune mediator in the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway

    Författare :Priya Revathikumar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Therapeutic implications of cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) activation have marked the beginning of a novel treatment strategy of passing electrical impulses along the left vagus nerve to alleviate acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. Extensive work in understanding CAP through vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) have identified key molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) mediated control of inflammation. 5. 10. The role of platelet thrombin receptors PAR1 and PAR4 in platelet activation

    Författare :Karin Vretenbrant Öberg; Tomas Lindahl; Sofia Ramström; Johan Heemskerk; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Platelets play a pivotal role in coagulation and haemostasis. Their most prominent task is to seal damaged blood vessels by the formation of a platelet plug at the damaged area. Once the injury is covered, platelets retract the coagulum to close the wound and allow the blood to flow freely in the vessel. LÄS MER
