  1. 6. Spinal cord injury : mechanical and molecular aspects

    Författare :Anna Josephson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Spinal cord; syringomyelia; MRI; fMRI; neurotrophin; Nogo; Nogo receptor; regulation;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic spinal cord injury leads to full or partial paralysis and loss of sensation below the level of injury. The annual incidence of spinal cord injury in the United States is 3-5 per 100,000 and in Sweden is 1.5-2 per 100,000. This translates to 11,000 new cases of traumatic spinal cord injury in the US and 150 in Sweden each year. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Författare :Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 3. 8. Analysis of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury

    Författare :Lars Werhagen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Spinal cord injury; spina bifida; central cord syndrome; neuropathic pain; neuralgia;

    Sammanfattning : Longstanding neuropathic pain is a challenge in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. Once established it is difficult to treat successfully. Neuropathic pain has a negative influence on quality of life and on the outcome of rehabilitation. The prevalence of neuropathic pain after SCI varies in different studies. LÄS MER

  4. 9. A regeneration strategy for spinal cord injury

    Författare :Jonathan Nordblom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : A severe traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently leads to a devastating and permanent disability. Due to glial scarring and an inhibitory local environment, regrowth of disrupted axons in the injured spinal cord beyond a lesion is obstructed, thus preventing reconnection with neurons at the other side. 5. 10. Assessment of rat spinal cord injury models

    Författare :Ning Xu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complicated and devastating condition, causing different extents of motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunctions. In addition, there is a risk for secondary complications after SCI including posttraumatic syringomyelia (PTS) that can cause further functional loss. LÄS MER
