1. Microsensors for in situ electron microscopy applications
Sammanfattning : With the ongoing miniaturisation of devices, the interest in characterising nanoscale physical properties has strongly increased. To further advance the field of nanotechnology new scientific tools are required. LÄS MER
2. Citrus Waste Biorefinery: Process Development, Simulation and Economic Analysis
Sammanfattning : The production of ethanol and other sustainable products including methane, limonene and pectin from citrus wastes (CWs) was studied in the present thesis. In the first part of the work, the CWs were hydrolyzed using enzymes – pectinase, cellulase and β-glucosidase – and the hydrolyzate was fermented using encapsulated yeasts in the presence of the inhibitor compound ‘limonene’. 3. Conversion processes for biofuel production
Sammanfattning : Despite the global positive impacts of soybean-, maize- and sugarcane-based (first-generation) liquid biofuels, several drawbacks pertaining to increased use of agricultural land, causing deforestation in some countries and extensive practice of fertilizers have been observed. As a result, developing advanced (second- and third-generation) liquid biofuels have been identified as better alternatives and are considered to be of great importance in the future. LÄS MER
4. Multidimensional engineering for the production of fatty acid derivatives in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : Saccharomyces cerevisiae , also known as budding yeast, has been important for human society since ancient time due to its use during bread making and beer brewing, but it has also made important contribution to scientific studies as model eukaryote. The ease of genetic modification and the robustness and tolerance towards harsh conditions have established yeast as one of the most popular chassis in industrial-scale production of various compounds. 5. Genetic engineering of Yarrowia lipolytica for the sustainable production of food oils
Sammanfattning : The human population and its demand for food oils is constantly growing. However, increasing food oil production currently requires the deforestation of mostly tropical rainforests to allow the plantation of oil crops. LÄS MER
