  1. 1. Invasive group A streptococcal infection : host and pathogen interactions

    Författare :Björn K G Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Group A streptococci; invasive infections; erysipelas; Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome STSS ; epidemiology; M1 serotype streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins Spe ; SpeA; toxin neutralization; opsonization;

    Sammanfattning : Invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infections were studied in 229 patients with a clinical diagnosis of erysipelas and 151 patients with GAS bacteremia, respectively. Beta-hemolytic streptococci were identified in about a third of the erysipelas patients, mostly group A, whereas group G streptococci were identified in about half as many episodes. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Lactobacillus mediated targeting of gastrointestinal pathogens

    Författare :Kasper Krogh Andersen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The mucosal membranes of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and respiratory tract are the main targets for infection in the human body and are repeatedly challenged by pathogens. Passive immunization using delivery of antibodies at the mucosal membrane may thus provide a new first line of defense against these pathogens. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Genomic organization and diversity of Clostridium botulinum group III : the bug behind animal botulism

    Författare :Hanna Skarin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Botulism is caused by botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) produced by the spore forming strictly anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Seven different types of BoNTs (type A-F) have so far been established on the basis of neutralization with different antibodies. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Regulatory mechanisms controlling T cell activity

    Författare :Anette Sundstedt; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; T cell superantigen anergy interleukin-2 transcription factor cytotoxicity; serology; Immunology; Immunologi; serologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on work studying the immunoregulatory mechanisms that govern the balance between activation and inactivation of T lymphocytes. Most of the work has been carried out in an experimental system using a T cell receptor (TCR-Vb3) transgenic mouse strain to obtain a homogenous T-cell population and utilizing the properties of bacterial superantigens to induce T cell responses and unresponsiveness in vivo. 5. 5. Immunomodulation by intravenous immunoglobulin : the effect on cytokine production studied at the single-cell level

    Författare :Ulrika Skansén-Saphir; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Preparations of pooled human immunoglobulin for intravenous use (IVIg) have an established therapeutic role in immunodeficiencies, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura and Kawasaki's disease and has been attempted in other immunologically mediated conditions including autoimmunity, malignancies, bone marrow transplantation and serious infections such as group A streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. The effects of IVIg on cytokine synthesis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was studied in vitro by applying a new immunohistochemical method for detection of cytokine production at a single cell level.
