7. Biochemical studies of thiamine deficiency in Baltic salmon (Salmo salar)
Sammanfattning : The first part of this thesis is about the development of a method to inject various substances into the yolk of fish eggs. The method was named nanoinjection and enabled the injection of volumes as small as 10-9 L into the yolk of single fish eggs directly after fertilization, with insignificant mortality due to the injection. 8. Experimental Studies on the Regulation of Pigment Dynamics in Phytoplankton and Copepods by Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the role of dissolved inorganic nutrients in generating changes in phytoplankton community and pigment composition and if such changes can affect the production of the antioxidant astaxanthin in the ecosystem via pelagic copepods. The background of my studies is the possible relationship between eutrophication and a reproductive disturbance in Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon (M74), which is associated with astaxanthin and thiamine deficiencies and oxidative stress. 9. The Threat to the Baltic Salmon - a Combination of Persistent Pollutants, Parasite and Oxidative Stress
Sammanfattning : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. 10. RNA-mediated gene regulation in Neisseria meningitidis and other nasopharyngeal pathogens
Sammanfattning : Neisseria meningitidis is a transient commensal bacterium of the upper respiratory tract and spreads through respiratory secretions produced by the carrier. While mostly harmless, the bacterium can cause invasive meningococcal disease by entering the circulatory system, leading to septicaemia and/or meningitis. LÄS MER
