1. Identifying risk of type 2 diabetes : epidemiologic perspectives from biomarkers to lifestyle
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is a significant health problem because of its high prevalence and strong association with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. An increase of type 2 diabetes is predicted due to increasing obesity and sedentary lifestyle habits. LÄS MER
2. Sami lifestyle and health : epidemiological studies from northern Sweden
Sammanfattning : The aim of this PhD thesis was to expand the current knowledge of “traditional Sami” diet and lifestyle, and to test aspects of the Sami diet and lifestyle, specifically dietary pattern, macronutrient distribution and coffee consumption, in population-based epidemiological studies of mortality and incident cardiovascular disease and cancer in a general population. In Paper I, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 elderly Sami concerning their parent’s lifestyle and diet 50-70 years ago. 3. Risk markers and incidence of atrial fibrillation in northern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinically significant arrythmia with a prevalence of approximately 3% in the general population. Less is known about the incidence of AF. In order to reduce the incidence of AF, it is of essence to identify modifiable risk factors for the disease. LÄS MER
4. Metabolic disturbances in shift workers
Sammanfattning : An increased risk for coronary heart disease among shift workers is earlier shown in the epidemiological literature. The aim of this thesis has been to penetrate metabolic disturbances and obesity among shift workers compared to day workers, and to compare if there are differences in total mortality or cause specific mortality of coronary heart disease (CHD), diabetes or ischaemic stroke in between the two groups. 5. Cardiovascular risk factors in aortic stenosis
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common hemodynamic significant valvular heart disease and affects about 2% of the population. The incidence increases with age. When symptoms of the stenotic aortic valve disease eventually occur the 2-year mortality exceeds 50%. LÄS MER
