1. Serum Amyloid A Protein (SAA) in Healthy and Infected Individuals
Sammanfattning : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 2. Medin amyloid - a matter close to the heart : Studies on medin amyloid formation and involvement in aortic pathology
Sammanfattning : Amyloidoses are a group of protein misfolding diseases characterized by deposits of insoluble fibrillar protein aggregates. Medin amyloid, which is the focus of this thesis, appears in the media of the thoracic aorta in nearly all individuals over 50 years. LÄS MER
3. Amyloid Beta – Biotherapy Target and Biotechnological Tool
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized primarily by memory impairment and cognitive decline. As of 2020, an estimated 50 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia and no disease-modifying treatment options are yet approved for clinical practice. LÄS MER
4. A Drosophila Disease-Model for Transthyretin-associated Amyloidosis
Sammanfattning : Amyloidoses comprise a group of gain-of-toxic function protein misfolding diseases, in which normally soluble proteins in their functional state undergo conformational changes into highly organized and generally intractable thread-like aggregates, termed amyloid fibrils. These structures accumulate predominantly in the extracellular space but growing evidence suggests that amyloids may start to form intracellularly. LÄS MER
5. Antibody-based bead arrays for high-throughput protein profiling in human plasma and serum
Sammanfattning : Affinity-based proteomics utilizes affinity binders to detect target proteins in a large-scale manner. This thesis describes a high-throughput method, which enables the search for biomarker candidates in human plasma and serum. LÄS MER
