1. First-principles theory of electrically-induced spin and orbital magnetization
Sammanfattning : Spin-orbit torques (SOTs) have emerged recently as practical tools to control the magnetization in spintronic devices, but it is debated what the underlying fundamental processes are that enable fast and energy-efficient magnetization switching. In this thesis, we investigate theoretically possible means of controlling magnetization in magnetic materials and heterostructures. 2. X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy on Nano-Magnet Arrays and Thin Films : Magnetism and Structure
Sammanfattning : The magnetic and structural properties of nano magnet arrays and ferromagnetic thin films are investigated. Circular x-rays are used and extensive use is made in this Thesis of the X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) technique. By means of the XMCD magneto-optic sum rules the values of the orbital and spin moments are determined. LÄS MER
3. Relativistic theory of laser-induced magnetization dynamics
Sammanfattning : Ultrafast dynamical processes in magnetic systems have become the subject of intense research during the last two decades, initiated by the pioneering discovery of femtosecond laser-induced demagnetization in nickel. In this thesis, we develop theory for fast and ultrafast magnetization dynamics. LÄS MER
4. Role of charge and spin fluctuations and their interplay in solids : A Green’s function approach
Sammanfattning : Due to the large number of electrons, solid state physics boils down to many-body approximations in which only selected types of collective excitations are taken into account, guided by the emergent properties of the material under study. In this thesis, the collective excitations of primary interest are electronic charge and spin fluctuations(plasmons and magnons) and nuclear charge fluctuations (phonons). LÄS MER
5. Effects of Spin-Orbit Interactions in Ferromagnetic Metal Nanoparticles
Sammanfattning : This thesis is a theoretical investigation of the effects of spin-orbit (SO) interactions in ferromagnetic metal nano-particles. Part I of the thesis is devoted to an elementary introduction of the research field, including recent experimental advances which partly motivated the work presented here. LÄS MER
